The Theatres Trust is a national body whose purpose is to promote the better protection of theatres. As well as considering planning applications relating to theatre buildings, it provides help and advice on planning and design matters, campaigns on behalf of theatres, and works to foster a general interest in theatre architecture. The Trust was set up in 1976 as a result of a private members bill in the House of Commons. It was sponsored by the Save London's Theatres Campaign, and was introduced by David Crouch M.P., and attracted all-party support. The Save London's Theatres Campaign, with Equity, raised the first £50,000 to enable the Theatres Trust to open it's first office. Equity who founded the Campaign (SLTC) in 1972 are still our sponsors and in the last few years have generously provided the Campaign with office space and also house our archives. Covent Garden Community Association whom we have worked with for over 30 years on behalf of all the theatres in the Covent Garden area and related issues. The Theatre Museum celebrates performance in Britain through imaginative exhibitions, activities and events based on the world's most exciting performance arts collections. A major exhibition which is called 'A Great Night Out! The making of the West End' includes items from the early history of the Campaign. In November 2003 the Director of the Museum invited the Campaign to deposit some of it's archival material with the Museum. The Museum already has our original scrap book containing many press cuttings and other material dealing with the crisis for which we were founded, which was to save 12 Theatres in Covent Garden due for demolition under a GLC plan as well as another 4 Theatres which would have been made unusable due to new road plans. SLTC has now handed over 60 of it's files. This material will now be available to Theatre Historians and those interested in the general rise of the conservation movement of Theatre and other buildings which began in the early 1970s with the Campaign's work. National Campaign for the Arts The Campaign is in support of their aims and work. Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection. It's members come from all over the U.K. and abroad. They aim to visit and develop links with all the surviving Matcham theatres and to encourage and carry out research into his life and work.
